Description
Nightmares are the spirits of shana (winged wolves) who died outside of Rine, and therefore didn't get into the afterlife. The can, however, be brought back into the world as spirits and be under control of the one who sumons them using the Shanan Power:
Black Magic--
Begin able to control black magic gives you the ability to control Nightmares and Shadows. The Nightmares were once Shana, fallen dead outside of the homeland and forced to serve eternity in the living. The Nightmares are creatures of pain and darkness, Shana who are doomed to live forever and serve in death as they failed to serve in life, yet they feel nothing good. Their bodies are pure agony and their minds naught but spite. Shadows and darkness fill their veins and they answer to a single master- the wielder of black magic.
First Entry: Epitome of Nightmares
So, this is a second entry I have for =Blue-Storm-Spirit's contest. I did a second entry because I wanted to depict a younger Nightmare as well. That and I thought of some more to add to the aspects of the Nightmares.
Should a shana die when they are young, even if simply a newborn, that is the form they stay in. Because of this, as a Nightmare, the creature's wings will never grow into its body, meaning they will always be smaller than needed to actually fly. Puppy Nightmares have great difficulty when flying, if they can fly at all.
Pup Nightmares also have less control over whatever abilities they may have. A wielder of Black Magic will therefore have more difficulty controlling a Nightmare that's in pup form, though it is possible.
Now, about the drawing itself, I had an entire background thing going on, but it turned out like garbage, so I cropped it to just what you see here.
The markings on this guy are also supposed to be lighter than the rest of his fur, but I don't know if it's really all that visible.
I really like how the wings came out. You know how baby birds' wings don't really have feathers but more like fuzz for a while? That's what I was going for. I was trying to show just how young this pup is, but he's still older than a newborn.
He's also supposed to be falling... but that didn't turn out so well. However, I do like this pose. ^^ I think his expression is cute (thus the title), though he is distressed since he can't fly.
Very minimal referencing. Just for the face structure and the wings. Pose came from my mind (though I highly doubt it's original).

I'm still in love with your descriptions you give on the different circumstances and all X3 and a young shana would defiantly be different than an adult one according to your description
